The Internal Medicine Residents participated in the 7th Annual PIAST Institute/Hamtramck Drug Free Coalition Health Hike on May 12th. This was a 5K beginning at Keyworth Stadium, and ending at the Hamtramck Community Center, where the participants were able to enjoy a lunch, games and activities and have a health screening – with services provided by the Internal Medicine Program, under the clinical supervision of Dr. Allie Tripi, DO.

The Authority Health Internal Medicine Residency Program is a three- year AOA/ACGME dually accredited program that provides diverse opportunities for training. Internal Medicine residents have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of sites receiving training and developing skills in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. The Authority Health Internal Medicine program offers a primary care track, providing special emphasis in the practice of ambulatory medicine in addition to hospital based experiences in general medicine, medical subspecialties, and critical care.
In 2018, Authority Health’s Internal Medicine Program is ranked #7 by the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) out of 119 Osteopathic residency programs, in the nation.

The program emphasizes ambulatory continuity medicine with 30 percent of the resident’s total time spent in the ambulatory continuity clinic. Throughout the residency, an increasing amount of time is spent in ambulatory (non-hospital) rotations. This program is designed for resident graduates to be well prepared to enter a primary care office-based practice, or a hospital based environment as an internist or hospitalist. Trainees who begin this program with the Internal Medicine Track Internship will complete their training program in three (3) years. Residents who complete another internship before beginning the program must complete three years of residency training in addition to the internship, unless some advanced standing status is approved by the American College of Osteopathic Internists.
Community Servitude and Community Presence are highly valued within the Internal Medicine Residency Program. During our scheduled +1 Weeks, the IM residents have a full day of Community Service throughout their residency. Many mutually beneficial relationships are established between our residents and the community partners we service. Focus Hope, Gleaner’s Food Bank, Capuchin Kitchen, Salvation Army, Urban Development Corporation and The Children’s Center are just a few of the community partners we are honored to serve.
Internal Medicine Residents clean up a home near our base hospital, Sinai Grace, for their September Community Service Project. Working with Urban Development, Inc. to revitalize a once abandoned home, to make it ready for the final touches before a family moves in.

The following are responses to Frequently Asked Questions about applying to our program that you may find helpful:
- Do you participate in the NRMP match? Our NRMP Program # is 1402500923.
- Do you have minimum COMLEX/USMLE scores? If taking USMLE, the Full Score Report is required. If you are an IMG, the ECFMG is required. Must Pass on First Attempt, score of 220 is the minimum accepted.
- How do I apply? Applications are ONLY accepted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Applications submitted directly to the Program Director or Program Manager will not be accepted.
- How many letters of recommendation do you require? Three (3)
- What is the time frame for applying? Applications are accepted as soon as ERAS is open for applications, through December 1, 2018.
- Do you accept osteopathic and allopathic graduates? Yes. DO and MD candidates are eligible to apply.
- Do you accept international graduates? At this time, the program is unable to sponsor those applicants needing visas.
- Do you need to have completed COMLEX Level 2 (both CE and PE) in order to apply? We prefer that COMLEX 1, COMLEX 2PE and 2CE be passed on first attempt. We may review applications without COMLEX 2 scores, however, we must have documentation of your successful completion of both 2CE and 2PE before we can offer a spot in our residency program.
- Do you offer observerships/audition rotations? No, at this time we are unable to accommodate observerships/audition rotations.
- Do you have a maximum number of years since graduation from Medical School? We do not consider applicants who have had more than a two (2) year gap after successful graduation from Medical School.
- Is the Authority Health program approved to train VA eligible residents? Yes

Joel Appel, DO, is the Program Director for the Authority Health
Internal Medicine Program. Dr. Appel is the Director of Sub Internship of Ambulatory Programs at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Appel is also the Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Sinai Grace Hospital. Dr. Appel’s current interest centers on the teaching of clinical reasoning skills in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years and he has authored numerous publications and presented nationally, in this area. He is currently on the council with the Clerkship Directors of Internal Medicine (CDIM) and chairs the Clinical Reasoning task force at the Directors of Clinical Skills (DOCS). Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. His wife Carol is a Nurse Practitioner, and his son, Aaron is recent graduate of Oberlin College. Dr. Appel believes strongly in community outreach and being politically involved in the profession.

A typical first-year resident schedule looks like:
- 3 blocks: internal medicine (IM Floors) completed at our affiliated hospital
- 1 block: general surgery (GS) completed at our affiliated hospital
- 1 block: intensive care unit (ICU) completed at our affiliated hospital
- 1 block: ambulatory internal medicine (AMB IM) completed at the resident’s FQHC continuity clinic site
- 1 block: ambulatory gynecology (AMB GYN) completed at the resident’s FQHC continuity clinic site
- 1 block: Inpatient cardiology (CARDIO) completed at our affiliated hospital
- 1 block: pulmonary (PULM) medicine completed at our affiliated hospital
- 1 block: emergency medicine (ER) completed at our affiliated hospital
- ½ day per week at ambulatory (continuity) clinic (CC), and an additional three (3) full days during our +1 week, throughout the academic year.
- **Our 4+1 Schedule allows for more community contact with our patient population, as during our +1 week, we are able to consistently participate in a ‘day of service’ with our community partners; making a positive impact on our Detroit Metro area.
