Welcome:
We invite you to learn more about our community-based Pediatric Residency Program.
We offer a unique approach to residency training that offers the finest in pediatric inpatient medicine with community health center exposure. Residents are provided with a very well-rounded education that includes comprehensive training at primary care clinical sites throughout the city of Detroit; Inpatient training at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, a tertiary care center that services as a referral center for the region; and residents complete a 24 month certification program in population health. Thank you for your consideration and we wish you every success in your residency training and careers as pediatricians
The Authority Health Pediatrics Residency Program is a three-year ACGME-accredited program that is uniquely positioned to provide the full range of training in pediatrics with an emphasis on urban communities that are medically underserved in the state of Michigan. Residents spend approximately 30% of their training at Authority Health and in Detroit-area federally qualified primary care health centers where they learn first-hand how population health effects health care delivery.
Residents spend the remaining 70% of their time rotating at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM) located in the City of Detroit. The core pediatric inpatient rotations are integrated with the large residency program at Children’s Hospital of Michigan providing for an excellent educational experience. Children’s is a 260-bed tertiary care center that serves as a regional referral center. It is a Level-1 trauma center with approximately 250 ED visits per day and more than 90,000 ED visits per year. There is a Level IV NICU with ECMO capability, a 48-bed PICU with more than 1600 admissions per year, and it serves as the regional poison control center for the state. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan was ranked by U.S. News and World Report among the best in the country in four pediatric specialties according to the new 2017-18 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings and is nationally ranked in: Cancer, Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology.
Continuity Clinic
Continuity Clinic sites are located at private practice clinics that are designated as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in and around Detroit. Residents spend one half day per week at their continuity clinic sites and will not only have exposure to primary care medicine in an underserved population, but will also learn about the nuances of running a business and how to manage a panel of patients as if they are your own. Residents complete one of two ambulatory rotations per year at their continuity clinic sites with the goal of establishing relationships with their continuity clinic patients.
Accreditation
The residency is a dual-accredited program with both ACGME and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accreditation. At the end of the three-year residency program, residents will be eligible for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics (AOBP). Upon graduation the residents will receive a diploma and certification of residency completion from both Authority Health and the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM).
We are proud to announce that our first Pediatric Graduating Class has achieved a 100% Board Pass Rate. Congratulations to all of the Board Certified Doctors!

Population Health Curriculum and Community Medicine Rotation
As a designated teaching health center Authority Health takes seriously our charge to train residents who are equipped to care for the medically underserved community. In order to understand how to mobilize community resources, residents complete a block rotation in community medicine during their first year and also are required to complete a 24 month certification program in Population Health. This certificate program is sponsored by University of Michigan School of Public Health. The goal of this certificate program is to build residents’ awareness and skills to support their patients’ health from a population health perspective.
By the end of the two-year program, residents should be able to:
- Describe the fundamentals of population health improvement beyond the clinical setting
- Discuss local, state, and national perspectives on health inequities
- Apply strategies to eliminate disparities in health outcomes
- Engage with programs and services to impact population healthThe 4-week community medicine rotation is a non-clinical month where residents rotate with several of our community partners in order to learn first-hand how many different aspects of a patient’s life influence their health. Our partners include: food truck….; The Nurse family partnership where they conduct home visit to first-time mom’s in the city with the goal of reducing infant-mortality rates through community outreach; The Children’s Crisis Care Center where the mission is to provide an immediate walk-in alternative to the hospital emergency room for non-medically related crisis affecting the mental health of children between 4-17 years old.
