“Healthy Detroit” by Nicholas Mukhtar – PowerPoint | PDF
Nicholas Mukhtar is the Founder and CEO of Healthy Detroit, a non-profit public health organization working in partnership with the US Surgeon General’s Office to bring preventive health care to Detroit. Raised in Shelby Township, Nicholas attended De La Salle Collegiate before beginning his undergrad at the University of Dayton on a Presidential Scholarship. After his first year in Dayton, he moved back to the Detroit area to care for his mother who has battling stage 4 cancer. He transferred to Wayne State University to complete his undergraduate degree in Biology, and quickly became heavily involved in city affairs. At the age of 19, Nicholas purchased a home in the city and his involvement in both the public and private sectors only grew, eventually leading him to form his own public health organization. Healthy Detroit has since been recognized as one of the leading up and coming preventive health organizations in the country according to the 2013 US Surgeon General’s Report to the President and Congress. Nicholas is currently working on the MPH portion of an MPH/MD degree at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. His research focuses on the use of urban parks and public spaces to promote health and wellness.
